Write This Down: Celebrating 100 Years Of Filofax Posted on 6 Oct 10:00

Filofax is a brand name that - like Sellotape - has become synonymous with a particular product. Sellotape became the general term for all sticky tapes due to their domination of the market through the quality of their product. The same is true for Filofax, who are often imitated, but never bettered.

At Paper Tiger we have sold Filofax since 1981. For decades, the Studio One and Paper Tiger team also used Filofaxes on the shop floor and in the offices to track projects, sales and of course diary management and planning. Filofax is almost unique, in the sense that the brand has been an integral part of what we do, how we do it, and part of the products we sell, for our entire history.

The Filofax has always been a practical, portable and useful device for storing information and keeping track of events, activities, people and plans. It is somewhere to store useful bits of data, keep treasured items or photos amongst the pages and folders, and to record inspirations, ideas and your wildest dreams. And even your darkest thoughts. Does it sound familiar?

At one point in our history, and at the height of 1980's Filofax popularity, the Paper Tiger shop on Lothian Road was pretty much exclusively given over to Filofax binders and pages. At the peak of the 'Yuppie' era, the Filofax was the iPhone of the moment, a status symbol, and investment in your own look and style, and a way of making a statement about yourself.

Of course, the mobile phone in ubiquitous now, and does much more than the analogue equivalent. But; electronica is ultimately ephemeral. The beauty of a Filofax - any notebook - is the record you that you keep of your actions, your deeds, your words, your thoughts and your own personally written record of your progress through a day, a week or a year.

That act of writing is powerful. Picking up a pen and writing down your plans and ideas is a both a physical commitment, and you are committing that act, that plan or idea, to your memory. A Filofax is a memorial device to assist you through life. Will you scroll back through your Google Calendar in years to come? Will you dig through the electronic email bin of memories to remind yourself of your achievements in life? I suspect much of it is already bytes on the breeze, but your Filofax, your life notes, will still be there for you to review, remind and remember the good times.

Filofax have 100 years of experience to share, and we are sharing 40 years of ours. Write. It. Down. What are you waiting for
